Summer Teachers & Tutors in MA, MD, MI & NYPosted by: Building Educated Leaders for LifePosted date: 2009-Jan-15
Location: Massachusetts
Do you believe in the tremendous potential of all children?
BELL serves children in low-income, urban communities who are struggling academically because they lack the quality educational resources to tap their true potential. To reverse course and begin to truly succeed, these children need your encouragement and your guidance. As a BELL tutor, you will act not only as an educational instructor, but as a mentor. You will have a chance to really make an impact, guiding children to develop self-confidence, to cooperate better with others, and to understand how achieving in school can help bring them the opportunities they deserve. You will help transform “children” into “scholars” and “leaders.”
Do you want an intense teaching experience that will prepare you for real leadership? This is not a desk job; BELL tutors are active and engaged every day. Working under the guidance of an experienced, certified teacher, BELL tutors run lessons and activities with scholars, manage classroom behavior, review assignments and quizzes, and communicate frequently with BELL parents.
Furthermore, this is a real teaching experience, not just 1-on-1 tutoring. While you will develop meaningful relationships with individual children, you are responsible for an entire group, or “cluster” of 10 scholars. You will be learning the skills professional teachers need to hack it in the classroom: how to engage a group, how to induce strong participation and encourage great behavior, and how to make sure every one of your scholars is learning. Whether you aspire to become a full-time teacher or whether you just want to be an effective communicator in the boardroom or courtroom, these are the skills you will need.
Do you want to be part of an organization that is changing the world? Working at a BELL site means collaborating daily with educators who are knowledgeable, accomplished, and who are passionately committed to instilling success in all children. You will gain valuable insight, ideas, and inspiration. Moreover, as a tutor for BELL, you will be the community representative of an organization nationally recognized as a leader in the field of urban education. You may decide to pursue full-time opportunities with our dynamic organization; BELL’s current CEO, Dr. Tiffany Cooper Gueye, actually began her career as a BELL tutor!
As a BELL tutor, your specific responsibilities will require you to: · Ensure the academic and social development of a cluster of scholars over the course of the school year.
· Tutor scholars and help them to master the basic skills of reading and writing using the BELL After-School Program curriculum.
· Serve as a mentor to an assigned cluster of scholars.
· Develop scholar goals and lesson plans for each scholar in the cluster.
· Maintain scholar academic portfolios and submit to the Site Manager as required.
· Keep track of scholars' attendance and behavior.
· Select and implement a behavior management tool that is appropriate for your cluster.
· Document observations and complete monthly Progress Report on all scholars.
· Administer pre and post tests, as well as BELL's reading and writing quizzes and assessments. Ensure that answer sheets are coded properly so that they can be scanned into Edusoft.
· Assist in classroom set up and breakdown of classroom each day.
· Conduct daily attendance checks.
· Plan and deliver daily lessons; photocopy lesson related materials.
· Attend Staff Meetings and provide program evaluations.
· Assist on all Field Trips with scholars.
· Collect and submit data for program evaluation.
· Ensure that academic and social goals are achieved for all scholars.
· Maintain classroom supplies.
· Recognize and reward scholars' effort and good behavior.
· Log and document all significant communications with parents.
In order to qualify for this position, you must have at least a high school diploma and have a passion for the success and achievement of our youth. Previous experience working with children or working/volunteering in the community is preferred but not required. Please visit us online at www.bellnational.org to complete an on-line application. |
